What is off-the-ball movement?
Off-the-ball movement in football typically refers to the dynamic actions and positioning of players when they are not directly in possession of the ball. It is a crucial aspect of the game that involves players making purposeful runs, adjusting positions, and creating space to influence the flow of play and maximise their impact on the game without the ball at their feet.
‘Good’ off-the-ball movement involves the player(s) actively seeking advantageous positions, making runs to receive passes, dragging defenders out of position, and contributing to the overall tactical strategy of the team. It is the constant motion and strategic positioning which aim to create openings by disrupting the opposition’s defensive shape and providing passing options for teammates, which enhances the team’s attacking efficiency.
